Static

We held hands,

fingers laced,

walking in perfect time

down the sidewalk.

Then I tripped and

lost my firm hold;

the rhythmic steps were gone

yet you didn’t notice then.

Our clasp loosened

and I stumbled,

letting go as I fell on

the curb. You saw and reached.

Only I didn’t reach

back to you.

I got up and staggered

right out into traffic.
